For Dogs and Cats Not Groomed Regularly Who May Be Matted or Impacted
The Fresh Start is for pets needing a full reset after coat neglect or overgrowth
Pampered Pets Parlor offers The Fresh Start service for dogs and cats whose coats have become overgrown, matted, or neglected to the point where regular grooming can't restore comfort or appearance. You bring in a dog with fur that pulls at the skin, nails curled into paw pads, or ears caked with wax, and you leave with a pet whose coat is short, clean, and no longer causing irritation. This service includes a full bath, blowout, detailed brushing, nail trim and grind, ear cleaning, pad trimming, and a complete haircut designed to remove problem areas and start fresh.
The session begins with an assessment of the coat to determine the best course of action for your pet. Matting that sit close to the skin carefully removed if possible and the remaining coat is trimmed to a uniform length that allows air to reach the skin and prevents new tangles from forming. At times, it may be necessary to take the coat very short to remove mats. The bath follows the haircut so loose fur and dander are washed away completely. The blowout removes any remaining loose undercoat, and detailed brushing ensures no small mats are left behind. Nails are trimmed back to a healthy length, ears are cleaned of buildup, and paw pads are trimmed so fur doesn't collect moisture or debris.
If your dog's coat has become unmanageable or their hygiene has been neglected, schedule a Fresh Start appointment at our Windsor salon to restore cleanliness and comfort.
How a Fresh Start Restores Coat Health
You'll see the change immediately when you pick up your dog. On some dogs and cats, the coat may be short enough that you can see the skin. On double coated dogs, the coat will generally remain and be free of painful mats and impacted undercoat. There are no mats left pulling at the shoulders, hind legs, belly, or behind the ears. Nails sit above the floor instead of splaying outward, and paw pads are visible and clean. Ears are clear of odor and discharge, and the dog moves freely and without the pain of pulling hair.
Pampered Pets Parlor finishes every Fresh Start service with a bandana or bow, marking the completion of the reset and giving your dog a polished, cared-for appearance. A shorter coat means less maintenance at home while the fur grows back in, and regular brushing becomes easier because there's no existing tangle to work around. For double coated dogs, the blowout clears out dead undercoat that would otherwise shed heavily indoors or become thick against the skin, blocking the air flow your dog needs for proper body temperature regulation.
This service is not a routine grooming appointment. It's meant for dogs who need intervention due to overgrowth, matting, or extended time without grooming. The haircut may be shorter than you're used to, but it's necessary to remove the problem areas and allow the coat to grow back healthy. The time required depends on the severity of matting and the dog's tolerance, but most appointments take two to three hours. If the coat is severely matted or the dog is highly anxious, additional time or breaks may be needed.
What to Expect During a Fresh Start Grooming
Dog owners in Windsor often have questions about what a Fresh Start involves and how to prevent the same issues from returning and what to expect during the appointment.
What does the Fresh Start service actually remove?
The haircut removes all matted fur, overgrown areas, and tangles that can't be brushed out. The goal is to leave a short, even coat that doesn't pull on the skin and allows the dog to move comfortably. For double coated dogs, mats and impacted hair will be removed while maintaining as much of the coat as possible. There may be uneven places where fur had to be removed, but we will do our best to blend them into the rest of the coat.
When should I bring my dog back for grooming after a Fresh Start?
Most dogs should return within four to eight weeks to maintain the coat before new mats form. Regular grooming prevents the need for another reset and keeps your dog comfortable year-round.
How short will my dog's coat be after this service?
The length depends on the coat type and how close the mats sit to the skin. In some cases, the coat may need to be clipped down to a quarter inch or less to remove all problem areas safely. We will not brush out mats as this is torture to your pet. Any mats we can't easily detangle will need to be removed.
What if my dog has skin irritation under the matted fur?
Groomers will note any redness, sores, or hot spots found during the haircut. You may need to follow up with a veterinarian if the irritation is severe or infected, but removing the mats is the first step toward healing.
Why is bathing done after the haircut instead of before?
Wet mats tighten and become harder to remove. Cutting the coat first allows the groomer to work more safely and efficiently, and the bath afterward washes away loose fur and skin flakes. When most of the coat is going to be removed, washing it doesn't help, and in fact can make things more difficult for your pet.
